As I ponder AI’s role in our lives, one metaphor that has resonated with me is “AI as your springboard to brilliance.” This metaphor perfectly captures how AI can accelerate our work and thinking processes, propelling us toward greater creativity and deeper insights.
AI can get you to a starting point faster than you ever could. It provides that initial boost, launching you into new realms of thought and creativity. But what you do after taking that leap from the springboard truly matters.
If mediocrity is acceptable, you’re missing the point of collaborating with AI. Accepting AI’s initial output without further refinement is, at best, a baseline version that won’t make an impact. The real magic happens when you engage with AI-generated content, infusing it with your unique insights and creativity to elevate it from good to brilliant.
In my experience, approaching AI lazily doesn’t yield meaningful results.
When I deliver my one-hour introduction to AI, I emphasize this: “If you think you can type a one-sentence prompt and get the first chapter of your book, then don’t even bother with AI.”
AI isn’t a shortcut to excellence; it’s a powerful tool that can help you reach it if you’re willing to put in the effort. It’s superb at elevating you to a competent starting point, but it’s up to you to take it further. Many of us may feel sub-mediocre at various tasks, and AI can help extend our productive reach — especially for those not surrounded by skilled professionals.
Remember, your effort will determine the impact of AI on your work.
When you sit in front of the chat window with your favourite AI, imagine the springboard metaphor. You’ve walked to the edge, preparing to make your dive. The action of the springboard and your mental work give you the elevation and momentum, but it’s your determination, attitude, skill, and creativity that determine the grace and impact of your dive.
The collaboration process with AI is where the mental magic happens. You can create something exceptional by actively engaging with the AI’s output — questioning, refining, and adding your personal touch. This process not only enhances the AI’s output but also encourages you to think more deeply than you ever have before. It’s an exciting journey of discovery and creation.
So, my advice? Never accept AI’s springboard output as the final product. Use it as a launching pad to brilliance. Exercise your brain, challenge yourself, and transform that initial draft into something extraordinary. Work this way, and you’ll find that AI saves you time and elevates your thinking and creativity to new heights. Remember, the more you challenge yourself, the more you’ll grow and excel with AI.
