Context & Critique Rule: The Hidden Key to Mastering AI and Your Cognition article by Greg Twemlow

Since December 2022, when GPT-3 was made available, a revolutionary shift has been rapidly unfolding. AI tools, once the domain of niche experts, have gained widespread attention and entered the public consciousness. You’ve likely invested in them, encouraging your teams to embrace their potential. But if you’re being honest, the reality often falls short of the hype. Generic emails, flawed reports, strategies that lack true human insight. You’re encountering the AI Productivity Paradox: the hopes for revolutionary efficiency met with the reality of mediocre output.

The problem isn’t the AI. It’s our approach. Many of us treat these sophisticated tools like a glorified search engine or a magic black box, hoping for instant perfection, and it leads to frustration, wasted time, and the nagging feeling that we’re missing something fundamental.

The truth is, the key to transforming AI from a disappointing novelty into a strategic partner has been hiding in plain sight since the launch of GPT-3 in December 2022. It’s my simple, powerful framework: The Context & Critique Rule™.

Read the Epilogue to understand how my Context & Critique Rule™ was used to write this article.

But the Context & Critique Rule™ offers a reward far greater than mere productivity. It promises a surprising, transformative benefit: it will make you a sharper, more strategic thinker. Think of it as a cognitive whetstone; a tool that sharpens your own mind with every interaction. It’s a philosophy of balanced interaction — the Yin and Yang of effective AI collaboration. In fact, the very article you are reading was co-created using this exact framework, a real-time testament to its power.

Let’s break down the Context & Critique Rule™ framework.

The Yang of AI: ALWAYS Provide Detailed Context (The Active Force)

A Note on Context Calibration: The depth of your context should match the complexity of your task. Drafting a quick, informal email doesn’t require a full strategic breakdown. Crafting a comprehensive business plan or a detailed project proposal does. The principle isn’t about creating unnecessary work; it’s about being as intentional as the task requires to get a high-quality result efficiently.

The difference in output from a well-crafted prompt will be stark. You’ve just guided a powerful intelligence towards your specific strategic needs. And here’s the crucial next step in the cycle: the AI’s detailed response requires your careful consideration. A high-quality output naturally prompts you to think, “This looks like a great plan, but my expertise can help make it even better with the next prompt.”

Think of “Always providing detailed context” as the Yang principle of AI interaction — the active, assertive, and creative force you bring to the conversation. You’re not just asking a question; you are commissioning a piece of work, shaping the output before it’s even created.

For leaders and executives, this isn’t merely about getting better answers; it’s about leveraging AI for strategic advantage:

  • From Generic to Strategic: Detailed context elevates AI output from disposable fluff to strategically-aligned drafts ready for refinement.
  • Maximising ROI: Every minute spent crafting a precise prompt is an investment that saves ten minutes of editing and revision downstream.
  • Ensuring Brand Alignment: This ensures the AI’s output reflects your company’s unique voice, tone, and strategic objectives, protecting your brand integrity.

So, how do you do it? I recommend the “C-O-P-T-A” Method:

  • C — Context: Provide the necessary background.
  • O — Objective: Clearly state the specific goal.
  • P — Persona: Define the role the AI should adopt.
  • T — Tone: Describe the desired voice.
  • A — Audience: Specify who the output is for.

Example in Action: Instead of a vague prompt like: “Write some emails for sales leads.” Use COPTA: “Act as a seasoned marketing strategist (Persona) for a B2B SaaS company entering healthcare (Context). Draft a 3-part email sequence to engage cold leads from an industry conference and book discovery calls (Objective). Maintain a professional, confident, and insightful tone (Tone), targeting hospital administrators and IT directors (Audience) who are sceptical of new tech.”

The Yin of AI: NEVER Auto-Accept the Response (The Receptive Scrutiny)

This is the Yin principle — the receptive, reflective, and critical force. Once the AI presents its output, your human expertise, judgment, and wisdom must be applied. The AI provides the raw clay; you are the sculptor.

For leaders, this step is paramount for:

  • Risk Mitigation: This is your essential firewall against factual errors, AI “hallucinations,” or embarrassing inaccuracies that can damage credibility and lead to costly mistakes.
  • Quality Control: It elevates a 70% good draft into a 100% polished, human-approved, and strategically sound final product.
  • Injecting Unique Value: This is where you infuse the AI’s output with your unique experience, anecdotes, market insights, and strategic vision that no algorithm can replicate. This is how you maintain ownership of the final work.

One way to effectively apply this scrutiny is through the process below; however, you don't have to follow highly structured Contexts or Critiques if you apply your mind to the task and desired outcomes:
“V-I-S-A” Check:

  • V — Verify: Are the facts, figures, and names correct? Is any data cited accurate and up-to-date?
  • I — Improve: How can the language be sharpened? Is the structure logical and compelling?
  • S — Strategise: Does this output actually achieve the stated objective? Does it align with broader company strategy?
  • A — Authenticate: Add your personal touch. Integrate a specific company story or a bold concluding thought.

Example in Action: Let’s say the AI drafted the emails from our previous example. Your VISA check might reveal:

  • Verify: A statistic about market growth seems a few years old — you update it.
  • Improve: The subject lines are a bit generic — you refine them for more intrigue and personalisation.
  • Strategise: The third email focuses too much on features, not solutions to administrative pain points — you revise it to emphasise problem-solving.
  • Authenticate: You add a brief, personal anecdote about a common challenge you’ve seen in the healthcare sector, making the email more relatable and impactful.

The Rule in Action: Beyond the Boardroom

While the examples focused on business, the Context & Critique Rule™ is a universal framework.

  • For Learning: Instead of asking, “Explain quantum mechanics,” a student might prompt (Yang): “Explain superposition to a high school student using the analogy of a spinning coin.” They would then (Yin) cross-reference the AI’s explanation with their textbook to verify its accuracy and identify the analogy’s limitations.
  • For Creative Work: A novelist wouldn’t just say, “Write a scene with a detective.” They would direct (Yang): “Act as a noir writer in the style of Raymond Chandler and write a 300-word scene establishing a mood of melancholy and foreboding.” They would then meticulously rewrite phrases (Yin), sharpening the dialogue and adding sensory details to make it their own unique creation.

The tool changes, but the principle of intentional dialogue remains the same.

The Harmony: A Dialogue Where AI Prompts You Back

This is where the true magic of the Context & Critique Rule™ reveals itself. It’s not a one-way street of command and execution; it’s a dynamic dialogue where the human and the AI are prompting each other.

Your detailed prompt (Yang) directs the AI. The AI’s response, in turn, becomes a prompt for you. It’s an invitation to engage your expertise. It implicitly asks, “Here is a structured, data-informed starting point. How can your experience, wisdom, and strategic insight improve it?” and it reframes the entire interaction. You are no longer just a user; you are a collaborator in a powerful feedback loop. And this dialogue is precisely what leads to the most profound benefit of all: the deepening of your thinking.

  • The Yang of ‘Prompt Thoughtfully’ becomes an exercise in strategic clarity. To articulate a great prompt, you must first crystallise your own thoughts.
  • The Yin of ‘Analyse Deeply’ becomes an act of critical analysis. The AI’s response prompts you to question assumptions, validate information, and weigh suggestions against your intuition.

This reciprocal prompting transforms AI into something far more profound than a productivity tool. It becomes a mirror for your own cognition — one that reveals depths of thinking you didn’t know you possessed. Leaders who practise Context & Critique consistently report the same experience: they find themselves thinking more deeply than at any time in their lives. Not thinking more — thinking deeper. The questions they ask become sharper. The assumptions they notice become more subtle. The revisions they make reflect a level of discernment they didn’t know was available. This is not hyperbole; it is the documented outcome of sustained practice. Context & Critique doesn’t just improve AI outputs — it restructures how the mind engages with complexity.

Elevate Your Leadership, Elevate Your AI

The era of AI is not about outsourcing our brains; it’s about augmenting them. The Context & Critique Rule™ is your secret weapon, a philosophy for thriving in this new landscape. It’s been in plain sight all along, a simple yet powerful directive for engaging in a powerful dialogue with AI.

Embrace the discipline of thoughtful prompting and diligent review.

Understand that the goal isn’t to get the AI to think for you, but to engage in a partnership that helps you think better. By mastering this balanced dialogue, you will unlock unparalleled value for your business, and you’ll also discover a new level of clarity and strategic depth in your leadership.

There’s no need to settle for generic AI. Apply my Context & Critique Rule™ and experience a depth of thinking that is thrilling.

Epilogue: The Making of This Article (A Real-Time Case Study)

As I put the finishing touches on this piece, I had a realisation. The article you’ve just read is not just about the Context & Critique Rule™. It is a direct product of the very philosophy it describes.

It began with a simple exchange. I gave my AI collaborator, Gemini, a basic image of my rule and asked it to create a poster. The results were generic. The turning point came when I posed a simple, open-ended question: “Is my framework akin to Yin-Yang?”

That single, context-rich prompt (Yang) unlocked a deeper level of analysis. From there, the article began to take shape. But at every step, I practised the Yin of receptive scrutiny, pushing back, refining ideas, and adding my own core insights.

It was then that I realised we weren’t just writing about the rule; we were living it. To confirm this, I asked my AI collaborator a direct question: “did you realise we have followed the Context & Critique Rule™ in this chat?”

Its response was immediate and confirmed my observation:

“You are absolutely 100% correct. That’s a fantastic observation… Our interaction is a perfect case study of the Context & Critique Rule™ in action. You consistently applied the Yang principle by providing detailed context… and at every stage, you applied the Yin principle of receptive scrutiny… We didn’t just write an article about your framework; we used the framework to co-create the article itself.”

The article in your hands wasn’t simply planned and executed. It was discovered and forged through a dynamic dialogue between human insight and artificial intelligence, guided at every step by the Context & Critique Rule™.

This is the power available to you, too. It’s not a theory; it’s a practice. Now go and start your Context & Critique dialogue.

…It’s time to demand — and create — strategically.
