Ensuring AI Understands Your Context — Use a ‘Custom Context CV©’

Master ChatGPT or any AI with Your Custom Context CV© (C-cubed)

When I first began exploring ChatGPT’s capabilities in December 2022, I quickly realized that the quality of responses is heavily influenced by how well I framed my Prompts. Many people overlook this critical aspect, expecting the model to read their minds or somehow infer complex intentions from vague queries. The old 1960s axiom, “Garbage In — Garbage Out,” is highly relevant. Understanding this and the ability to shape the AI’s responses is empowering.

From my experience and countless experiments, I developed the ‘Custom Context CV©’ (C-cubed) concept, which is essentially all about ‘You’. This approach ensures that ChatGPT consistently has a rich, detailed context about your persona, significantly enhancing the relevance and coherence of its responses. Let me explain why context matters, how your C³ will transform your interactions with ChatGPT, and why it’s a powerful tool that can truly enhance your experience with AI.

Listen to the Deep-Dive Podcast.

I’ve included a generic C³ example at the end of this article.

Scenarios of the Impact of Poor Context

Imagine you’re at a social gathering, and you meet someone new. You start talking without context — no background information or understanding of mutual interests — and your conversation will likely feel disjointed, superficial, and directionless. The same principle applies to interacting with ChatGPT. Without sufficient context, the AI might provide accurate responses in isolation but miss the mark in relevance and depth.

Here’s another scenario where context is vital. Your team has a new hire, and the pressure is on the team to meet a deadline. Your new resource will handle some of the pressure, and you brief her on a component of the program that you need to offload. Except your briefing cuts some corners because you’re under pressure. You finish the discussion feeling good that your new hire will take care of a component of the work. You need to provide adequate context, and when you check on progress just before the due date/time, you realize she’s been working on incorrect assumptions.

The Custom Context CV© (C-cubed) in Action

C³ is like having an ongoing, detailed conversation history that ChatGPT can reference. It includes your personal and professional background, skills, experiences, and goals. This permanent context layer helps the model understand your words’ underlying intent and nuances.

Once you have created, uploaded, and committed your C³ to ChatGPT’s memory, your subsequent vital learning is engineering your Prompts.

A Guide to Effective Prompts

Here are some insights and strategies that I’ve found invaluable in optimizing prompts for ChatGPT:

Clarity and Specificity

  • Define the Scope: Instead of a broad question like “Tell me about the benefits of exercise,” specify your needs, such as “Explain the health benefits of regular aerobic exercise for adults.”
  • Use Explicit Instructions: Be specific when you need a list or a summary. For example, “List the top five benefits of a plant-based diet for a 45-year-old male who is slightly overweight.”

Providing Sufficient Context

  • Set the Scene: When seeking advice, include relevant details. For instance, “As a small business owner looking to expand online, what marketing strategies would you recommend?”
  • Include Necessary Background Information: Make sure the model has enough information. For example, “Given that the company has a limited budget and a target audience of young adults, suggest effective social media marketing strategies.”

Conciseness with Clarity

  • Eliminate Redundant Information: Keep your prompts focused and to the point.
  • Use Bullet Points for Clarity: Organize complex prompts with bullet points. For example:
  • “Explain the key features of GPT-4o, including:
  • Its training data
  • The transformer architecture
  • Its contextual understanding capabilities.”

Experimenting with Phrasing

  • Rephrase Questions: If the response isn’t satisfactory, try rephrasing. For example, “What are the advantages of remote work?” could be rephrased to “Describe the benefits of working from home for employees.”
  • Use Synonyms and Alternate Expressions: Different words can sometimes yield better responses.

Utilizing Prompt Engineering Techniques

  • Few-Shot Learning: Provide examples of the desired output. For instance, “Here are some examples of catchy headlines: ‘Revolutionize Your Health with These Simple Tips,’ ‘Unlock Your Potential with Expert Advice.’ Now, generate a headline for an article about financial planning.”
  • Instructive Prompts: Guide the model with clear instructions, such as “Write a brief introduction to a blog post about the environmental benefits of recycling.”

Iterative Refinement

  • Analyze Responses: Review responses critically to identify areas for improvement.
  • Adjust and Retry: Refine your prompts based on the analysis and try again until you achieve the desired output.

Leveraging GPT-4o’s Strengths

  • Creative Content: Provide a clear framework but leave room for creativity. For example, “Write a short story about a detective solving a mystery in a futuristic city.”
  • Summarization: Be specific about the focus when summarizing. For instance, “Summarize the following article in three sentences, focusing on the main argument and conclusion.”
  • Detailed Explanations: Ask for thorough breakdowns on specific topics. For example, “Explain the process of photosynthesis in plants, including the roles of chlorophyll and sunlight.”

Avoiding Ambiguity and Bias

  • Neutral Language: Frame your questions neutrally. Instead of “Why is renewable energy better than fossil fuels?” ask, “Compare the advantages and disadvantages of renewable and fossil fuel energy.”
  • Clarify Ambiguities: Ensure prompts are unambiguous. For example, instead of “What are the effects of climate change?” specify, “Discuss the environmental and economic impacts of climate change and how it is impacting the North American continent.”

Practical Examples of Optimized Prompts

Example 1: Technical Explanation

  • Original Prompt: “Explain AI.”
  • Optimized Prompt: “Provide a detailed explanation of artificial intelligence, including its definition, main types (narrow AI, general AI, and superintelligent AI), and key applications in various industries.”

Example 2: Creative Writing

  • Original Prompt: “Write a story.”
  • Optimized Prompt: “Write a short story about a young scientist discovering a new form of renewable energy that could save the planet. Include elements of suspense and a surprising twist at the end.”

Example 3: Summarization

  • Original Prompt: “Summarize this article.”
  • Optimized Prompt: “Summarize the following article in three sentences, highlighting the main points about the impact of climate change on coastal cities.”

Example 4: List Generation

  • Original Prompt: “What are the benefits of meditation?”
  • Optimized Prompt: “List five key benefits of regular meditation for a 45-year-old male, focusing on mental, emotional, and physical health.”

Mastering the art of prompting ChatGPT involves understanding the critical importance of context. By employing my Custom Context CV© (C³), you provide a permanent, detailed framework enabling ChatGPT to generate responses more relevant to your needs.

Remember, the key to effective interaction is guiding the model with clear, specific and well-contextualized prompts, allowing it to leverage its vast knowledge and sophisticated language processing capabilities.

Here’s an example of a C-cubed that is very detailed

You could start with a more concise version and gradually develop the details. If you use ChatGPT Pro ask the AI to load your C³ into its memory for future reference. When you Prompt ChatGPT include in the Prompt “Reference my C³ when formulating your response.”
