The traditional career advising model revolved around grades, assessments, and brief conversations. However, in the transformative year of 2024, marked by significant advancements in AI and technology, AI revolutionised this approach.

Students are no longer defined by their school reports. Dreams, passions, and talents extend far beyond the classroom. With the empowering influence of AI, students can now take the reins of their career journeys like never before, shaping their future in alignment with their unique strengths and aspirations.

But here’s the challenge: Many Career Advisers have not realised what’s changed. They’re accustomed to being the gatekeepers of career advice.

Many still rely on a narrow focus — assessing grades, checking boxes, and making recommendations based on limited data. However, advisers must embrace their evolving role to empower students in this new era.

Let’s explore this shift through the story of Alex, a Year 11 student who exemplifies what’s possible when students take control of their futures — with the support of a skilled Career Coach who understands how to use AI as a collaborative tool.

Meet Alex: Taking the Driver’s Seat in Career Planning

Alex is in Year 11 and has always been a high achiever in science and technology. She’s also the captain of her school’s soccer team, works part-time at a local café, and volunteers in community beach clean-ups. For years, Alex thought her future was limited to whatever her grades and a brief conversation with her adviser could suggest. But this year, everything changed.

Alex’s dream is to find a career that allows her to combine her love for technology, leadership, and environmental sustainability. But like many students, she needed to figure out how to translate these interests into a viable career path.

The Turning Point: Using AI to Empower Self-Directed Exploration

When Alex’s Career Adviser, Mrs Davis, learned about the potential of AI tools like ChatGPT, a language generation model that can respond to prompts with human-like text, she realised her role needed to evolve. It was no longer about telling students what to do — it was about empowering them to explore possibilities for themselves.

Here’s how Alex and Mrs Davis worked together to take control of Alex’s career planning:

Step 1: Gathering a Comprehensive Data Set

Mrs. Davis guided Alex to pull together insights from all areas of her life:

  • School reports with feedback on her strengths in STEM subjects and writing.
  • She has personal references from her soccer coach, who highlights her leadership skills, and her employer, who praises her customer service and problem-solving abilities.
  • Extracurricular activities that showcased her passion for sustainability, such as her volunteer work in environmental projects.
  • Alex’s hopes and dreams, including her desire to combine tech with positively impacting the environment.

By gathering all this data, Mrs. Davis helped Alex see that she was far more than just her grades.

Step 2: Crafting an AI-Driven Career Exploration Prompt

With Mrs. Davis’s guidance, Alex learned how to craft a powerful prompt for ChatGPT. She aimed to explore career paths aligned with her achievements and future dreams.

Alex’s prompt was: “Using my school assessments, personal references, and passion for technology, leadership, and environmental sustainability, can you suggest three career paths that align with my strengths and interests? What skills should I develop to explore these fields further?”

Step 3: Iterating and Interpreting AI Insights

ChatGPT suggested several potential career paths for Alex, such as:

  • Sustainable Technology Consultant: Combining her love for tech and the environment.
  • Sports Analytics Manager: Leveraging her leadership and data skills in the sports industry.
  • Tech Entrepreneur in Green Energy: Using her skills to innovate in sustainable energy solutions.

But the process continued. Mrs. Davis helped Alex interpret the AI’s suggestions, asking follow-up questions to refine the recommendations:

  • “What specific projects can I take on to gain hands-on experience in sustainable tech?”
  • “How can I start building a network in the green tech industry while still in high school?”

This iterative process allowed Alex to explore how to turn her passions into actionable steps.

Step 4: Taking Action and Planning Ahead

Empowered by the AI’s insights and Mrs. Davis’s support, Alex began to take concrete steps:

  • Enrolling in an online course on sustainable business practices to deepen her knowledge.
  • Connecting with local environmental organisations to gain hands-on experience.
  • Starting a blog to document her journey in exploring tech for good and building a personal brand that would stand out in university applications.

Most importantly, Alex realised that career planning was no longer a one-time conversation. She could continuously revisit her plans, ask new questions, and adjust as she learned more about herself and the world, staying engaged and committed to her future.

The New Role of the Career Adviser: From Adviser to Career Coach

Many career Advisers, like Mrs. Davis, need to rethink their approach. In this new era, Career Advisers are no longer simply giving answers. Instead, they transform into Career Coaches who inspire and empower students to discover their paths.

Here’s how the role of a Career Coach is different:

Facilitator of Self-Exploration

Career Coaches guide students to reflect on their unique experiences, strengths, and aspirations. They help students ask more profound questions and craft AI prompts that align with their passions and values.

Coach in AI Literacy and Skills

Career Coaches teach students to use tools like ChatGPT to explore careers, frame questions, and analyse AI responses. This requires continuous upskilling to stay ahead of emerging trends in AI, technology, and future job markets.

Guide for Continuous, Iterative Growth

Career Coaches work with students earlier and more frequently, turning career planning into an ongoing, iterative process. They encourage students to revisit their goals, refine their plans, and explore new paths as they grow and learn.

The Power of Starting Early and Iterating Often

The beauty of this new model, which I have named GlidePath Studio, is that it’s an ongoing journey. Students can start exploring their career paths as early as they feel ready — whether in Year 8, Year 7, or even earlier. The earlier they begin, the more time they have to focus, gain experience, and develop deep expertise in areas that genuinely excite them.

  • Early Exploration: Imagine using AI tools to explore careers aligned with your art, coding, or science interests before high school begins.
  • Continuous Feedback Loop: As you gather experiences, you can refine your AI prompts and adjust your plans.
  • Empowerment Through Self-Reflection: This process builds confidence, resilience, and adaptability — skills crucial for navigating the future.

Commencing A New Era of Empowerment

2025 begins a new era in career guidance; the future belongs to those willing to explore it with curiosity, courage, and the right tools. Whether you’re a student like Alex, eager to chart your course, or a Career Adviser ready to embrace the role of a Coach and collaborator, the opportunity to shape your journey has never been more accessible.

Career skill sets are evolving rapidly, and the ability to adapt, reflect, and iterate on your plans will be the most valuable skill you can develop. By leveraging AI as a partner in this process, supported by a skilled Career Coach’s guidance, you can create a future that aligns with your passions, strengths, and dreams.

The time to start is now. Whether you’re asking your first question to ChatGPT or guiding a student to discover their path, your journey is one of continuous learning, growth, and self-discovery. The future isn’t something that happens to you — it’s something you create, one Chat session at a time.

So, to all the students and Career Coaches out there: What’s the next step you’ll take today to unlock your potential and shape the future you desire?

The possibilities are endless. All it takes is the courage to ask, explore, and dream.
